Mental health is defined by the Public Health Agency of Canada as:

“The capacities of each and all of us to feel, think, and act in ways that enhance our ability to enjoy life and deal with the challenges we face. It is a positive sense of emotional and spiritual well-being that respects the importance of culture, equity, social justice, interconnections, and personal dignity.”


At UOIT and post-secondary institutions across Canada and all over the world, it has been recognized that mental health is an important component of university life that has a demonstrated effect on learning and academic success. Therefore, supporting mental health and well-being of all students through upstream initiatives, as well as providing additional support for students who need it, aids learning and academic success (MacKean, 2011).
