You can make a difference to help protect our environment by following blue tips.

Earth

  • Avoid disturbing sensitive areas while boating.
  • Choose wood from sustainable sources for fencing and furniture.
  • Clean windows with vinegar, water, and a squeegee instead of chemicals.
  • Donate or recycle electronic equipment.
  • Grow vegetables in containers if space is limited.
  • Hold a garage sale for unwanted items.
  • Plant trees to support the environment.
  • Recycle old papers and cardboard.
  • Start a green bin for organic waste.
  • Use reusable cloths instead of paper towels.

Energy

  • Choose energy-efficient appliances.
  • Clean filters and coils on appliances regularly.
  • Hang clothes to dry to avoid wear from dryers.
  • Improve insulation and seal drafts to reduce energy use.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to save on heating costs.
  • Practise energy efficiency at home, school, and during activities to reduce fossil fuel use and emissions.
  • Replace hard-to-reach bulbs with energy-efficient ones.
  • Unplug devices with 'phantom loads' or use a power bar.
  • Use window coverings to control indoor temperature.

Air 

  • Buy a push lawn mower for exercise and to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Compost leaves and brush to avoid increasing carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Encourage carpooling when possible.
  • Keep your car tuned up and your tires properly inflated for fuel efficiency.
  • Rake leaves instead of using a blower to reduce noise and emissions.

Water

  • Avoid cleaners containing phosphates to protect aquatic life.
  • Collect and use rainwater for your lawn and plants.
  • Do not leave the water running when brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing dishes.
  • Fix leaking hoses and nozzles to save water.
  • Install water-saving showerheads.
  • Keep the septic system healthy by pouring 250 millilitres of baking soda down a drain weekly.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean walkways and driveways.
